This Pre-Academic English course is designed for students who want to improve their general English competency, and also to have a chance to get familiar with some Academic English components. Students must be at the Intermediate level to be accepted in the course. This course not only aims to provide a foundation to EAP, but to help students attain a higher level of ESL proficiency where they are using English with ease. Lessons are based on several different themes. After completing this course, students will have an academic foundation allowing them to handle a more rigorous and intensive workload.
Students are encouraged to study course vocabulary and materials outside of the class in order to accelerate their learning progress.

Class Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Be familiar with the fundamentals of Upper-Intermediate level English
• Utilize modifiers, gerund phrases, and infinitive forms in writing
• Use phrasal verbs more naturally in both writing and speaking
• Identify topic sentences within a given paragraph
• Understand higher level vocabulary as well as their contextualized meaning
• Develop higher academic writing and reading skills
• Write a short narrative paragraph
• Identify meaning of vocabulary from context
• Distinguish fact from opinion
• Paraphrase given texts with a high level of accuracy
• Produce a coherent paragraph made up of a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion
• Use correct sentence structure, appropriate vocabulary, and appropriate transitions in writing

Attendance Policy

Attendance is an integral part of this class. Students who miss more than 3 days per session will find it very difficult to advance to the next level.
