This course is intended to help students improve their English skills in preparation for academic purposes such as Pre-Academic 2, IELTS, and EAP. There is a focus on developing language competency in reading and writing skills, speaking, pronunciation, listening, spelling, and grammar. This course prepares students to use English with increasing fluency and accuracy in classroom and social situations and to participate in Canadian society as informed members. Students will develop the oral presentation, reading and writing skills required for their further studies. They will expand their listening and speaking skills through participation in discussions and writing skills through the interpretation of a variety of texts, short essays, and summaries in English.
Students are encouraged to study course vocabulary and materials outside of the class in order to accelerate their learning progress.

Class Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Confidently express their ideas about topics like future jobs, past events, wishes, etc.
• Develop receptive and productive skills
• Use infinitives and imperatives for giving suggestions
• Write well-planned paragraphs with appropriate main idea and topic sentence
• Recognize syllables, stressed syllables and sentence stress
• Use more complex grammar structures both in spoken and written form such as past perfect, gerunds, and relative clauses
• Understand every-day language with a normal pace used in general situations

Attendance Policy

Attendance is an integral part of this class. Students who miss more than 3 days per session will find it very difficult to advance to the next level.
